The 140th annual Kentucky Derby takes place this year on Saturday May 3, 2014. Run every consecutive year at Churchill Downs since 1875, this year’s Run for the Roses will feature twenty of the top three-year old thoroughbred horses, who will compete for the chance to win $2 million and go down in history. Kentucky Derby is only the first leg of the Triple Crown, a series of three races which, if won, is considered a thoroughbred’s highest achievement. Only 11 horses in history have ever won the Triple Crown.
For sports bettors everywhere, the Kentucky Derby represents an exciting and lucrative time. From betting on the Kentucky Oaks, to betting on Kentucky Derby futures, to betting on Derby Day itself, there are plenty of ways to get in on the action.
Do Your Homework
Research all of the Kentucky Derby contenders and observe performance under pressure, whether or not they are injury prone and assess the strengths and weaknesses of each horse. Get a good sense of which horses have the potential to win – they don’t necessarily have to be past winners or top contenders.
Study Pace and Time
Be on the lookout for horses that were not properly trained or aren’t experienced enough for the Derby. Each year, there are some entrants who lack the experience with distance or pressure. Also beware of fast starters, who run quickly and tire themselves out by the end. Use resources like Equibase or Horse Racing Nation.
